Oil in Nigeria
The Ijaw and the Ogoni communities of the Niger Delta argue they’re getting a raw deal from Shell and the other oil companies working in the region.
Whilst Shell claim they are funding local hosptials the evidence was the opposite. Instead the communites had run down hospitals, poor schools, oil spills from old and rusting pipes in their forest; wiping out their hunting and gathering propsects. But the history was even worse. Shell had colluded with the Nigerian military to have the Nigerian human righs activist and playright Ken Saro-Wiwa hanged in 1995 .
The memory was still raw and the struggle continues
